Your Action is Needed!!! Malmo Safety Update – Trent Charles, President, Malmo Nov 2023
Your Safety Statistics are Needed!
It’s been amazing connecting with so many Malmo residents over the last few months! There is so much warmth and dedication from our gem of a community. In my conversations with community members, the #1 issue is safety. We’ve been getting the ball rolling, and recently I met with the Chief of Staff (Yonathan Sumamo) for Minister of the Public Safety and Emergency Services (Mike Ellis). To spur action, they want us to provide a formal letter with as much data as possible. We will be sending a joint letter with Southgate Mall. Your statistics will greatly help us strengthen our letter!
Have you experienced crime or a lack of safety in Malmo? Please let us know by emailing president@malmoplains.com or filling out this Google Form (There will not be any personal information disclosed in the letter, we will be providing totals).
If possible, we would like to know:
Date/Time
Type of incident
Dollar value involved
Personal injuries?
Police called
Outcome
For Malmo Hall, we were broken into twice over the past 3 months. First, our main door handle was broken through. A few weeks later, the deadbolt of our garage door was cut through with an angle grinder. In total, our repairs cost $2,651.10. Thankfully Malmo resident Mike R. witnessed the second break-in and called police, who were able to recover the stolen belongings and apprehend the suspects.

An Open Dialogue with EPS - Mark your Calendar
Saturday November 25th 2pm-4pm at Southgate Baptist Church
Our second quarterly Safety Meeting is an Open Dialogue with Edmonton Police Service Saturday November 25th 2pm-4pm at Southgate Baptist Church (11107 51 Ave). As frontline workers, EPS shoulder a lot of public criticism and blame. In my meeting with Police Chief Dale McFee, I learned that EPS is working hard to enforce safety, and they shared that they can be limited by external factors such as government policies. They are excited to share the initiatives they have in motion, tips to keep our neighbourhood safer, as well as answer any questions from residents.
In my meetings with different stakeholders, one crucial element that seems to be missing are lines of communications- whether it is between the city and province, between the city and the community, or the province and community. Our goal with the Open Dialogue is to start the flow of communication, starting with the community and EPS. We all need each other to create a successful outcome!
*To ensure your questions are answered during Q&A, please submit them to president@malmoplains.com beforehand.

Radon, a potential silent killer may be lurking in Malmo homes
November is National Radon Action Month in Canada.
Radon is a silent killer potentially lurking in your homes, but because its effects are not instantly fatal like from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning or smoke inhalation from fumes from a raging fire, Radon doesn’t seem to be given the attention it deserves.
Radon is everywhere. According to Health Canada, it’s a naturally occurring radioactive gas created as uranium found in soil and rock decays. Like CO, it’s also odourless and tasteless. In Canada, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, next to smoking, and the number one cause of cancer in non-smokers. In fact, according to Stats Can, in studies done in 2016 & 2017, deaths from Radon induced were almost 10x that of CO.
Now living in Malmo, you might think - I don’t have a Radon problem, otherwise I would have likely heard about it. In fact, the Canadian Prairies has the 2nd highest levels of Radon in the world next to Poland.
Yes, Radon in Malmo
My Radon was discovered by accident. I was testing a gadget called the Airthings Wave for review for a magazine article. Airthings designs at-home Radon and Air Quality measurement devices. Over a period of a year, I discovered that Radon levels in my home were on average almost double that at which my home needed mitigation.
I was no doubt a little worried. This was obviously a concern that needed to be addressed and thus began my investigation and research. It included speaking with experts, scientists, remediators, lung associations, government officials and even people who had lung cancer despite never shaving smoked.
This resulted in a series of three articles called the Dangers of Radon, published by Troy Media which can also be accessed from our website MalmoPlains.com.
Articles Include:
Radon: the silent killer lurking in your home
The myths and misconceptions surrounding radon
How I discovered radon in my home and mitigated it
November is National Radon Action Month in Canada. I encourage you all to read the articles and take action on Radon. A simple test might just give you peace of mind.

Spring worker bee - Sat April 29, 10:00
Hello neighbours,
This Saturday, April 29, we're going to have a spring worker bee to clean up the grounds around the community league hall. The community league will provide fluids (water and coffee), work gloves, and garbage bags. We won't start too early - say 10:00 AM. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.
Also, the Community League's annual general meeting is next month. I'll be stepping down as president which is one of a handful of positions that are in need of fresh faces. Please join us Tuesday May 16th at the hall. Sandwiches will be served starting at 6:00 and the AGM will begin at 6:30.
Thanks

March 1 Safety Walk Survey
Hello neighbours,
On March 1st, the City of Edmonton held a community safety walk along the alley from McLaurin Memorial Baptist Church on 51 Ave to the end of the alley at the Southeast corner by the Whitemud Freeway and then along 111 Street between these two points. It also included the outside area around of the West node or the LRT pedestrian walkway including the ground floor entrance inside.
The City is now conducting a survey about the feeling of security the residents have about that area (map within the surveyform). Please feel free to add your feedback here: Community Safety Audit form

Edmonton’s Actions on Transit Safety
Hello neighbours,
It certainly seems our neighbourhood receives more than its fair share of crime from the LRT so I was interested in sharing this blog post from Mayor Sohi that was sent to me from our City Councillor Michael Janz. One thing that caught my eye was that not only did the City increase funding to the Edmonton Police Service by $7 million but the City also transferred $22.3 million to the Police Service to make up fro a cut in funding from the provincial government.

Thanks to EPCOR
Hello neighbours,
Most people don’t realize that many stormwater ponds in Edmonton are not really ponds but are water “management facilities” that are connected via large pipes and that the flowing water within these facilities makes the ice on them unsafe for recreational use.
EPCOR has a grant program to encourage communities to build proper skating areas (away from stormwater facilities) and even though Malmo Plains does not have any stormwater ponds, the Malmo Plains Community League got an $800 grant to help cover the cost of our rink.
I just want to thank EPCOR for helping make Malmo Plains the great community it is.
