Commmunity Safety/Awareness On January 26th, Malmo Community League held a community safety awareness meeting where Constable Gerald Jorgensen provided us with a good understanding of community safety issues, bylaws officers have available to help curb crime, and steps that individuals can follow to minimize opportunities for crime. The presentation included showcasing online crime reporting; this reporting provides us with better awareness of crime levels and incidents, and also allows police to target their limited proactive time available. Residents can also submit email addresses so police can provide alerts related to our area, and many attendants did so. Kelly Holland from the City introduced printed material of the programs that groups or communities could undertake. And it wasn't all about the police effort—the estimated 30 participants at the meeting provided specific, useful observations and neighbourhood knowledge that will help the police as well. With the extra traffic (cars and people) expected with the coming of the LRT, it is good to know what resources are available. Residents interested in taking this initiative further can contact me. In the Meantime If you are witness to a crime in action (or if you feel any threat), call 911. If you have observed recent crime incidents or have suspicious behaviors to report, you can call (780) 423-4567. Parking Restrictions in Malmo? Do we want parking restrictions in Malmo to restrict the “parasitic parking” expected with the coming of the LRT to Southgate? This is the question concerned residents came together with on Feb 2nd and 9th to answer. What impact will parking restrictions have? On the first night, the City of Edmonton traffic department sent two representatives to inform us about the options available to communities to control on-street parking. After some more investigation and a follow-up meeting, attending residents decided it was advisable for Malmo to proceed with the process of implementing parking restrictions. A key part of the required process is that affected residents will be petitioned, and there are opportunities for a fair and open process. Your community league will assist a core group of residents formed for this process and will facilitate communication. Please watch for communications. If you are eager to help and haven’t received additional contact information yet, you can contact me. |
